'NovaDrome' (PS2/Xbox/PC) Announced - Facts & Screens

by Rainier on March 24, 2004 @ 9:57 a.m. PST

Carmageddon developer Stainless Games has revealed their new project "NovaDrome". Situated on planet Nova, The NovaLords needn ew "volunteers" for their brutal gladiatorial racing sport. Your character has been abducted by the aliens and taken to Nova. You are given a vehicle, and sent straight into combat. The game consists of a series of automotive battles in many, varied purpose-built arenas, pursuing your unwanted career as an alien race’s source of sick entertainment.

The planet Nova. The NovaLords (as the ruling class of Nova were known) hold gladiatorial extravaganzas to keep their populace happy. But it would hardly have appeased the public if they were watching their own kind being put to the slaughter. So the governing authorities found an alternative source of doomed combatants.

They discovered a little planet called Earth. There it was: a perfect breeding ground for all the raw material they could possibly need.

Thus the ‘abductions’ began; Novarian craft would pop out of worm-holes at night, stun a crowd of people with their neuron rays, and whisk them back to Nova.

The Human gladiators were promised the ability to win their own freedom if they showed no mercy and fought to the death like wild animals. They would be brainwashed and returned to Earth on the next man-crop harvester.

Basic Premise of the Game

Your player character has been abducted by the aliens and taken to Nova. You are given a vehicle, and sent straight into combat.

The game consists of a series of automotive battles in many, varied purpose-built arenas, pursuing your unwanted career as an alien race’s source of sick entertainment.

The Vehicles

The vehicles are Mad Max 2-style off-road buggies with protective cages, onto which are mounted plasma blades, torches and armour plate.

As the game progresses, by winning events you unlock the faster, tougher and more dangerous vehicles of defeated opponents as they drop out of the NovaDrome championships.

The Arenas

The game is set in a futuristic other world and the arenas are super-clean geometric structures built from composite materials.

The arenas have been purpose built to maximize the spectacle, so they are filled with hoops, ramps, and hazards.

There are 4 distinct phases to the player’s progression through the game world, punctuated by Boss encounters. Each Zone has five different Levels, and each level can have up to five events taking place in it. In Career mode this equates to over 90 levels of progression via fast-paced automotive mayhem.

Single Player Career Mode

The single player career mode sees the player work their way, via increasingly violent and hectic automotive battles, right to the top of the NovaDrome League. Once they win the final Championship Head-to-Head battle against the big boss Major Badass, they have won the Career Mode game.

By this point all arenas, all opponent vehicles and all powerup classes have been unlocked and can be selected in Quick Race mode games. Gameplay progression in career mode is straightforward: win an event to move on, otherwise simply play it again.

Quick Race Mode

For players who would like to take a break from the structure of the career mode, Quick Race Mode is available. Here the player can mix and match any vehicle, venue and event type that’s been unlocked in career mode for a quick fix of NovaDrome action.

Multiplayer Mode

Play against up to eight other gamers in a number of multiplayer game scenarios, based on the Quick Race Mode games. You can select any combination of track and game type that you have unlocked in the campaign mode, and play it again with any vehicle that you’ve been awarded.
