Black Lake. In the cellar of one of the houses, the severely mutilated bodies of four people are discovered. The victims turn out to be unemployed vagrants. The original theory about a gang war has not been confirmed

March 17, 2019

In Black Lake City Park, the bodies of two young women are discovered. Identification of the victims is complicated. The Prosecutor’s Office is issuing no comment.

March 19, 2019

Three more bodies are found in different parts of town. The investigation is working on a serial killer theory.

March 26, 2019

Another eleven bodies found in the last week. Panic in Black Lake. The Federal Security Service is sending agents in to cooperate with the investigating
team.

April 4, 2019

The elusive murderer’s total body count has reached seventy-eight. The population of Black Lake is fleeing the town en masse. The investigation is at an impasse.

April 11, 2019

The town has been cordoned off by troops. A state of emergency has been declared in Black Lake. People are being evacuated and placed in special quarantine centers. The murders continue. . . .

The Black Lake Medical Center morgue. It’s cold. Only the hum of the refrigeration unit disturbs the quiet. . . . Suddenly the light goes on and off a few times. A spark bursts from behind the electric power panel, there’s a loud crack, and the hum of the refrigerator gradually dies out. . . . Cold and dark. And pain, a dull, aching pain all over. What’s wrong with me? Where am I--and who am I? Gradually I’m starting to feel my arms and I touch the space around me. There’s something smooth and cold everywhere. It’s like I’m lying in a sack. All the way at the top, right in front of my nose, my stiff fingers feel a zipper. I catch it with my nail and unzip the sack. . . . My eyes are stabbed by an unbearably bright light! When my vision has adjusted a little, I look around. There are tables with black plastic sacks everywhere. I myself am lying in a similar unzipped sack on a table. Directly opposite me water is dripping from a plastic grating in the wall.

I try to stand up and I stagger so badly I can barely keep my feet by grabbing onto the edge of the table. What on earth has happened to me? Who am I? I don’t remember a thing. . . .
