About Judy

As WP's managing editor, I edit review and preview articles, attempt to keep up with the frantic pace of Rainier's news posts, and keep our reviewers on deadline, which is akin to herding cats. When I have a moment to myself and don't have my nose in a book, I like to play action/RPG, adventure and platforming games.

'Everown' Revealed - Screens

by Judy on Dec. 29, 2004 @ 11:54 a.m. PST

Everown is a multiplayer-only game, focused on contesting against your friends over Local Area Network (LAN) or players from all around the world through built-in Internet Matchmaking System. It will be free to try, giving those of you not yet adjusted to online gaming an unique chance to find out that nothing can beat the immersion of battling against a sentient human being instead of a mindless computer drone (thanks Tiscali). Read more for details and screens ...

In a nutshell, Everown is a multiplayer, real-time tactical game focused on small-scale battles, currently in development for PCs. In Everown, players will assume the roles of futuristic or fantasy gladiators, and set to defeat their foes in one of Everown's several game modes - some of which being focused more on action, while others provide a truly strategic experience.

Overall, Everown's main focus lies in tactics, and as such it provides you with many diverse ways of dispatching your foes, favoring wit and reason over mere reflexes and precision that are the essence of most today's first-person shooters.
In Everown, you view your character from above instead of from his eyes, giving you a perfect overview of his surroundings at all times, enabling you to truly plan your actions instead of simply surviving from battle to battle.

Everown is a game by gamers, for gamers. Greatly have we enjoyed the complexity of PvP combat in old school MMORPGs such as AC-Darktide or Ultima Online, along with all its special moves, buffs and debuffs, where defeating your opponent was a matter of employing superior tactics and judgement, rather than just having a better aim with a sniper-rifle.

In Everown, we want to recreate a similar style of combat, but without the endless leveling treadmill we're seeing in every new MMORPG of this day - each player will be given the same chances, or rather the same potential, upon the start of each match. But what weapons you wield, what armor you wear and what skills your train, those are the choices you have to think about carefully, as each of them shapes your character in a different way, enabling you employ specific types of tactics while denying you the other.
