'Star Wars Galaxies: Episode III Rage of the Wookiees' Developer Q&A

by Mark Crump on April 29, 2005 @ 3:10 a.m. PDT

SWG: Episode III Rage of the Wookiees adds a whole slew of content taken directly from the highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith movie, including the adventure planet of Kashyyyk, home to the Wookiees. We sat down with LucasArts producer Julio Torres and had a little chat, new screens included ...

WP : Any graphics upgrades in this expansion?

The directed content in Kashyyyk has allowed us to manage the graphics on the screen more efficiently, we have been able to increase the detail of the art as a result.

WP : Is the content designed for both new and experienced players?

Kashyyyk is a mid to high level planet. In addition there is content for the new player experience that will enhance the over all introduction to SWG to the new players.

WP : According to the web page, there are over 100 story-driven quests. Can you explain this in more detail: is it a long story arc, random missions or a combination of both.

There are a number of new story arcs with multiple new missions associated with each of them in Rage of the Wookiees. You’ll learn the tales of the Rryatt Trail that once served as a rite of passage for young Wookiee males yearning for adult status. You’ll also learn much of the story behind the Imperial supported Trandoshan enslavement of the Wookiees along with the story of the Wookiees who now inhabit the Mydrill Caverns and the Dead Forrest. And you’ll also discover some relics from the Clone Wars that occurred some 20 years before.

WP : Most of the quests I’ve done in SWG have just been “go to the waypoint and kill what’s there.” Are the quests in the new expansion going to be more challenging?

The missions on Kashyyyk are both deep and engaging. Kashyyyk is an adventure planet. So while on other planets, exploring is very much encouraged, on Kashyyyk, you’ll follow story lines through the missions and quests you take. Your experience will be very directed.

Having said that, there will be some very challenging missions on Kashyyyk. There are many rewards to unearth through the missions and things like Grievous’s starfighter, which is awarded at the end of a quest, will not come easily.

WP : What advantages will I have with the cybernetic parts?

The implants will have various combat-related uses: some will be better for Melee professions, others will be better for Ranged professions. Installing them will give you some statistical enhancements as well as a special combat move or two. And you’ll be able to revert to your biological limbs at any time.

Another thing to note is that cybernetics will replace armor altogether for that particular area of the body – so a savvy player will have to decide which to use. The trade-offs will be interesting, so you’ll have to decide between giving up a few points of armor in return for a special burst-run ability or a power attack.

WP : How do I get the cybernetic parts?

You will be able to earn these implants by completing a number of different quests on Kashyyyk. Once you have them, you can get them installed by NPC Cybernetics doctors at the larger Medical Centers in the galaxy.

WP : Are they geared more for combat classes?

Right now, the cybernetic parts being added with Rage of the Wookiees are for use in primarily in combat.

WP : Will the new starships be made available for new pilots, or will you need a certain skill level to use them?

The starships we are adding with the Episode III Rage of the Wookiees expansion will require master pilot status and one must have completed the quest to be able to use it.

WP : What can you tell me about the new space mining missions?

Much like all the rest of the new content in Rage of the Wookiees, space mining skills will be earned by players through a series of quests. The gameplay itself is simple enough: find an asteroid, blast the heck out of it, and gather the resources that fly off. We are shooting for a really fun, simple arcade experience here.

But because there is plenty of money to be made by mining and selling the higher end resources that result from good mining practices, at higher levels you’ll start to see Mining Pirates show up to compete with you. These resources will not replace any existing resources found in the ground game, but there will be specific schematics and recipes that require you to have space resources to make.
