'Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball' (PS3/X360) Gets Dated - Screens

by Rainier on Aug. 8, 2008 @ 2:29 p.m. PDT

The first game in the Pirates vs. Ninjas series allows up to 8 players to choose from 5 unique teams, and compete against one another in the ultimate sport of champions – Dodgeball. However, this is no ordinary Dodgeball game. Teams aren’t restricted to one side of the court, instead they roam freely around 6 gorgeously detailed arenas. In addition, characters are equipped with combat moves and special abilities to deliver a more action-packed experience than could ever be found on the playground.

The first game in the Pirates vs. Ninjas series allows up to 8 players to choose from 5 unique teams (Pirates, Ninjas, and three more to be unveiled later), and compete against one another in the ultimate sport of champions – Dodgeball.

Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball is being developed using Infyrno, Blazing Lizard’s next-gen proprietary game engine. It allows for sweet gameplay with an art style and theme suited for all age groups. There will be Exhibition, Story, and Challenge modes and multiplayer support for 4 players Local / 8 players Online, and 4-player Co-op modes.

In the last couple of months the folks at Blazing Lizard have been hard at work adding in a slew of new features, like:

  • The option to have more than one ball in play – In single player, choose to have from 1 to 5 balls. In online multiplayer, the number of balls in play is determined by the team size (from 2-5 balls).
  • Traditional Dodgeball mode – This is old-school dodgeball with the field split down the middle. Characters cannot use special moves, and are automatically forced back to their side of the field if they cross the line.
  • Enhanced Dodgeball mode – This mode is similar to Traditional Dodgeball mode except characters can use special moves, and if you cross the middle line, you’re given a three second countdown before being forced to drop any balls in your hand and return to your side of the court.

What this means for fans of Pirates (the sea-faring kind) and Ninjas is more bang for their buck when the game releases (this also includes fans of the other teams in the game, Robots and Zombies). In addition to the free-flinging arcade dodgeball events already in place (look out for Peg-Leg Stomps and Shuriken Attacks.), Blazing Lizard is adding more traditional rules dodgeball modes where teams stay only on their side and multiple dodgeballs are in play. Now we can settle the score once and for all.

Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball will be available on Xbox Live Arcade Sept. 3, 2008, no date set for the PlayStation Network version yet.
