Deus Ex 2 and Thief 3 Go Havok

by Rainier on Nov. 8, 2001 @ 11:48 a.m. PST

Havok has signed a deal with Eidos Interactive's Ion Storm Austin studio (ISA) to provide real time physics. Ion Storm will be building on the go-anywhere, do-anything theme of Deus Ex and Thief in their next releases to allow even greater interactivity with all objects in a scene. Havok physics will work alongside the ISA-modified Unreal engine in both titles. The freedom to engage the game in an unpredetermined way will be a hallmark of using the Havok physics engine.
“Games like Deus Ex and Thief are all about player experimentation in a deeply simulated world, so a detailed physics simulation is absolutely critical if we're going to achieve our gameplay goals. Havok is a powerful, off-the-shelf, multiplatform tool that really meets our needs. From a development standpoint, Havok slotted into our code base relatively easily. And when we've needed support, the folks at Havok have been terrific. Solid tools, easy integration, good support – Havok not only saved us time and money, it's going to allow us to meet gamers' needs and exceed their expectations. You don't often hear developers oohing and aahing but even the dev team members were blown away when they first ran through a map after we got the Havok code running,” said Warren Spector of Ion Storm Austin

“We now have over 40 titles in development on all major console platforms using Havok physics. These developers are setting the standard for future expected levels of gameplay with their use of physics. Our job will always be to keep up with the demands of our game customers as they develop scenarios and gameplay that require new and exciting physics,” said Hugh Reynolds, CEO of Havok.

Havok 1.5 has just been released. Added features to the top-selling physics SDK include fast character cloth, enhanced deformable object physics and a groundbreaking car dynamics tool for real-time changes. The Havok Car Tuning Tool is the first application that facilitates real-time tuning of vehicle SDK parameters via a graphical user interface.

Valve, Ion Storm, Nihilistic, MindsEye, Acclaim, Dark Black, Lost Boys, Microids, Cyan, Headfirst and Team 17 are all using Havok physics to enhance gameplay in their upcoming titles
