'Dead Matter' Shows Sign Of Life, Switched To Unreal Engine 5, Early Access Soon - Screens & Trailer

Dead Matter is a true sandbox survival horror where you will fight to survive in a zombie-packed, post-apocalyptic world that fosters whichever play-style fits you best.

In the world of Dead Matter, the world has slowly collapsed as a rampant virus spread across the globe turning regular people into Infected husks of their former selves. With no options left, you must survive the harsh Canadian wilderness and the hordes of Infected and rival survivors.

The world slowly ground to a halt over the last three months as a novel virus that turns its victims into ravenous monsters spread from country to country, causing a global pandemic.. World nations fell one after the other, with your home country of Canada being among the last to fall.

At one time, you were a member of society, working your job, day in and day out. Now, you are one of the few untouched by the virus. You've managed to make your way to the Rocky Mountains in hopes of finding a refuge from the cities, but it's not the paradise you imagined.

It’s been a couple of weeks since the Infected reached the Kananaskis area and, unfortunately, you’re running low on the supplies you had when the outbreak started.

You haven’t had truly drinkable water in over 24 hours, your food is getting scarce, and you’re getting quite hungry. Infected hordes are wandering the remnants of civilization and, worse, the cool breeze in the air warns that winter is on the horizon.

Oh, and you're not the only one out there desperate to find food and supplies.

Now that nothing is left, how will you survive?

In 2020, we launched our Closed Alpha version of Dead Matter to our backers. This allowed our community an early look at the progress we’ve made. After we received feedback on the alpha version of the game, we expanded our studio so we could make the push forward to an early access release.

In 2021, QI Games began exploring new gameplay elements and defining the core of Dead Matter. Thus far, throughout 2022, the team has overhauled the development pipeline and brought on new staff to make bring a quality Early Access launch closer to fruition. We’re still working on Dead Matter and moving close to an Early Access build.

“Dead Matter is incredibly ambitious in its ideas and, as a team, we’ve had to dedicate time to laying a strong foundation to build off of,” says Nik Zorko, CEO and Game Director. “Our team is really proud of what they’re putting together but, we don’t just want to tell you about the incredible things we’ve been working on, we’d like to show you.”

“Migration to Unreal Engine 5 has had a positive impact on Dead Matter in many ways, but the most important thing for those waiting to play is: It gives QI Games the tools and technology to make a better game while streamlining processes,” says Derek Czerkaski, Head of QI Games. “We totally understand those who are disappointed that the EA launch will not include the full map, but the focus on one landmark location, the UE5 migration, and the team’s sharp focus on the core loop will make that launch significantly stronger.”

Key Features:

  • Realistic and Stunning Open-World World!: Dead Matter takes place in the stunningly beautiful Alberta Rocky Mountains. Our Early Access launch will focus on the town of Dead Man’s Flats and the surrounding area, and we will expand our map with subsequent updates. We want our open world to feel rich with detail and challenging for players.
  • Hardcore Survival Mechanics!: Dead Matter challenges players to deal with various survival problems like hunger, thirst, injuries, sickness, etc. To deal with these ever-present concerns, you will need to explore various locations and areas to find the proper supplies. Be careful, though, as dangers like Infected or opposing players frequent the most valuable areas.
  • Team Up or Fight on Multiplayer!: Dead Matter features a robust multiplayer. Playing online adds a whole new level of survival gameplay, where you must decide if you want to team up with fellow survivors or play as a lone wolf. The choice is yours.
  • Realistic Combat Systems!: Use guns, melee weapons, or even your fists to fight other survivors and the Infected. Combat is a core feature of Dead Matter, and we want our combat to work and feel amazing, setting a bright example above the rest of the games in the Survival genre. We’re also designing Dead Matter with multiple playstyles in mind.
  • Engaging Infected Systems!: Running into Infected can be a death sentence; use your wits to take down hordes and avoid getting yourself into trouble, or use stealth to avoid the encounter altogether. Our Infected provides a unique experience and one that will evolve with the development of Dead Matter.
  • High-Fidelity Characters!: We’re using Unreal’s MetaHuman to deliver high-fidelity players and Infected models. You can also customise your characters with unique looks and clothing. Customization will continue to expand throughout development.
  • Next-Generation Technology!: Dead Matter uses third-party and first-party technologies and tools to deliver a next-generation experience. We intend to support Dead Matter for many years to come. Therefore, building it with a reliable and robust technical foundation means a longer life down the road.

Dead Matter is in development for PC (Steam), preparing an Early Access release before full launch.
