About Tony "OUberLord" Mitera

I've been entrenched in the world of game reviews for almost a decade, and I've been playing them for even longer. I'm primarily a PC gamer, though I own and play pretty much all modern platforms. When I'm not shooting up the place in the online arena, I can be found working in the IT field, which has just as many computers but far less shooting. Usually.

PS4/XOne/PC Preview - 'Syberia 3'

by Tony "OUberLord" Mitera on June 16, 2016 @ 1:00 a.m. PDT

Syberia 3 is the latest installment in the adventures series with original author Benoit Sokal writing the script.

Kate Walker is back in Syberia 3, in her first all-new adventure since 2004. After the events of the first two games, Kate was able to complete her mission but was left for dead. Leading up to the events of the new game, she was rescued by a tribe of nomads before being brought to a hospital to recover. She quickly finds that the hospital is not what it seems, and one of her first tasks is to figure out how to escape before learning more about the events surrounding the area.

The first two games were quite popular, and fans of the series have been waiting for a new installment for quite some time. Syberia 3 marks a new entry point into the series, so while old fans will pick up on some references, the third game is designed for new fans to jump in without any prior knowledge. This opens the game to a whole new group of people while also continuing Kate's story.

For the first time, the game is rendered in full 3-D, which also extends to the puzzles. One such puzzle in the beginning tasks Kate with repairing a doorbell. You control Kate directly but can move the crosshair to interact with different objects. You can also control the camera, but it's sometimes scripted when a cinematic approach calls for it.

After leaving her room, Kate is interrogated by one of the doctors, and from the conversation options, she can choose to tell the truth or lie. She is connected to a lie detector, though, so the doctor will call her out if her answers are false. This can affect the course of the interrogation, but this aspect was glossed over somewhat during the presentation for the sake of time.

Later, Kate gets a key to visit other floors of the hospital and eventually escape, but she first learns that the hospital is also home to elements that are trying to poison the water supply to kill off the nomad tribe that saved Kate. Thus, it is her mission to figure out how to stop them and save the nomad people. Along the way, Kate will interact with characters with fully voiced dialog over what is predicted to be a 12-hour game.

Puzzles feature prominently in the title and benefit from the new rendering and modern improvements to the graphics. As you successfully work layers of puzzles, additional layers of the current music are added as both an indicator and a reward for solving that part. Get past everything, and the music builds to its full breadth as you proceed, and it's an elegant touch. The music is composed by the same composer who worked on Syberia 2 as well as the recent Fallout games, and it's quite easy on the ears.

Syberia 3 will be coming out in December of this year for the PS4, Xbox One and PC. Since this is a new entry point into the series, it'll be a great time for budding adventure fans to check out the series that has received such critical acclaim in the past. Its modern approach brings a lot of improvements for long-standing fans. We'll have more information on the game as we approach its release date.
