New York, 2044 The states of the earth are united under a world government. But in the Mega Cities, nothing much has changed: Crazy gurus preach the end of the world, yuppies in skyscrapers design advertising strategies, gangs and thugs hang about in the suburbs, terrorists throw bombs and old men spin out conspiracy theories. Mobile Messengers, Satellite Cars and fancy communication gadgets have made life a lot easier — but also more tech-dependent, and threatened by supervision. The communications designer Peter Wright doesn’t give a heck about politics and politicians, about scandals and scoops — and he doesn’t even care very much about the government’s „Freedom of Speech“ campaign, which his very agency has been picked to work on.

He leads a life in isolation, doesn’t know — and doesn’t even want to know — his neighbors. In fact, since Peter’s wife and his seven year old son died in a air catastrophe, he doesn't care about anything anymore. He hates his job, spends his nights drinking whisky, and only looks for human company in the anonymity of computer chat rooms. His life changes abruptly one night when a black van stops in front of his house. A heaviliy armed SWAT force storms into the hall on the 23th floor, and bursts into the apartment of his neighbor, Mr. Oswald, an online journalist and family father. The SWAT force drags Oswald off - and from that day on, he seems to have disappeared from earth. The police claim not to have arrested him at all. Shocked and touched by these events, Peter decides to forget about his agony, and become involved. He talks to his neighbor’s wife and son — and he promises to help investigate why the journalist has disappeared. With a mysterious photograph of Oswald in his pocket, Peter sets out on his search — and discovers that the journalist was on the brink of uncovering an incredible worldwide conspiracy, in which powerful authorities are apparently involved.
