'Splitgate' Open Cross-play Beta Extended, Sees 600,000 Downloads in First Six Days

by Rainier on July 21, 2021 @ 12:00 a.m. PDT

Splitgate is a multiplayer first-person shooter that uses player-controlled portals to create a new dimension of arena combat.

Splitgate evokes your favorite memories of the most-revered shooters of the past two decades, embracing the classic and familiar feel of arena multiplayer with a multi-directional twist. Splitgate: Arena Warfare’s world-bending portal mechanic lets players instantly create and link gateways around the map, encouraging and rewarding constant jetpack-boosted movement, strategic flanking and ambushes, and action that truly embraces all 360 degrees. It also looks really cool.

Splitgateis designed to be equally accessible to first-time and veteran FPS players, with an infinitely high skill cap that will take players hundreds of hours to refine and master. Splitgate is built in Unreal Engine 4 by 1047 Games, a passionate group of Halo fans, whose experience and love for the genre transcends the typical development team.

Featuring cross-play and cross-gen gameplay on PC, Xbox and PlayStation, Splitgate's fans are able to get a sneak peek at what awaits them later this month as they squad up, drop in, and start fragging.

1047 Games announced that the open beta for Splitgate has been extended amid an influx of more than 600,000 new players in six days. Splitgate’s official launch on July 27 will include new content and crossplay across PC, PlayStation and Xbox consoles (both gens).

Veteran and new players alike are preparing for battle and jockeying for top spot on the leaderboards for when the game officially hits its 1.0 status on the 27th of this month. The game’s Steam reviews have skyrocketed to more than 15,000 “Very Positive” reviews averaging a 94% rating from users in recent days and holds the top spot on Trending Games on the Steam Charts.

“I want to sincerely thank every single player who has taken a chance on our game,” said Ian Proulx, CEO and co-founder of 1047 Games. “From its small beginnings as a student project when we were in college to today, where we’re on the verge of launching across two generations of consoles, this is a dream come true for me and the result of incredibly hard work by everyone at our studio.

“I especially want to thank our loyal PC players who have stuck with us since our game first rolled out on Steam. We cannot wait to continue to iterate on Splitgate and grow the game alongside our growing fans.”

1047 also urges fans to continue to be patient as the small team continues to scale its servers. Nicholas Bagamian, CTO and co-founder of 1047 Games said, “So far our community has been gracious and understanding of our downtime as we work to release various bottlenecks that have occurred as more people jump in to play. We are a small, growing team and are working around the clock to make sure that our transition to launch is as smooth as possible so that as many people who want to play can jump in without issues.”

Constant movement is encouraged and rewarded as players strategically place portals to FLY, FLANK and FRAG through the air to create incredible, previously-impossible highlights.

Instead of a complicated and convoluted matchmaking system, Splitgate uses a simple, intuitive 1-50 ranking system determined purely on player wins and losses, cutting down on in-game griefing while providing little incentive for player boosting.

Players start each match with the same loadout, eliminating any unfair advantages from the start. Power weapons spawn on a timer across the map, and players are encouraged to use these powerful weapons to achieve montage-worthy killstreaks.

Standard FPS controls and intuitive portal mechanics mean beginners are up and running right off the bat. However, players must constantly evolve strategies and their ability to think with portals in order to outsmart one another. The skill cap is unlimited.

Splitgate launches with cross-play for PC (Steam), Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PS5 and PS4 on July 27, 2021.
