'Project Winter' Celebrates 2.5 Million Players With New Craftable Items, Price Drop - Trailer

by Rainier on Sept. 22, 2022 @ 5:50 p.m. PDT

Project Winter is an 8-person, multiplayer game focused on social deception and survival where players are randomly assigned to the role of Traitor or Survivor.

Cut off from all external communications, surrounded by icy tundra, and covered in a thick blanket of paranoia and suspicion, the eight-person multiplayer game strands players in the freezing wilderness where they must work together to escape the approaching blizzard as well as the deathly intentions of fellow team members.

The survivors must battle against the freezing elements as well as the traitors in their midst who will deceive, sabotage, and even commit murder to thwart their teammates’ efforts to escape. For the players that encounter wild animals or murderous teammates on their travels, there’s a variety of weapons they can use to gain the upper hand and cling desperately to any chance of survival.

Communication and teamwork are essential to Survivors’ ultimate goal of escape. You’ll discover secret traitors within the group who steadily gain strength as the match progresses.

More than 2.5 million survivors across all platforms have braved the cold in Project Winter, and to celebrate developer Other Ocean (whose other works include MediEvil 2019, Minecraft 3DS, and Rick & Morty: Virtual Rick-ality) released a free content update today adding in new craftable items for Traitors along with a permanent price drop to $9.99 USD.

Traitors can plan for even sneakier betrayals with four new items now available for crafting. The Disguise Kit allows the single changing of a Traitor’s appearance to look exactly like another character, dead or alive. There is no way to alter in-game voices though, so be careful when speaking up.

Take advantage of the bitter cold tundra through the creation of Ice Bombs. Similar to Smoke Bombs, these chilling explosives not only create a poof of smoke to obscure vision but also rapidly reduce survivors’ warmth.

Turn the white sleet beneath one person’s feet into a silent cloud thanks to the single-use Snow Shoes. Eliminate any traces of footprints or the loud crunch of snow-steps with increased movement speed for a short time.

Draw Survivors away from the rest of the group with the Sound Emitter. This sinister trap emits audio clips over a short amount of time and a very long distance before eventually self-destructing.

This free update also includes UI changes, removal of the ability to see characters who voted in the exile booth, increase in the max number of roles in matches, among other quality of life improvements.

“If you told us that our social deception passion project would reach over 2.5 million total players, we never would have believed you,” said Ryan Hale, Product Director of Other Ocean. “We are so grateful to everyone who gave Project Winter a chance. We have even more updates planned for this year to make a powder fresh experience for our dedicated community, including possible teases for our next Project. Stay warm and stay tuned!”

Key Features

  • Escape to Survive - As a survivor among a group of strangers, you will have to collect resources, battle the elements and complete a series of tasks to call in one of several rescue vehicles.
  • Hidden Roles - Among the group of survivors lurk hidden traitors. The traitors are known to each other but not the survivors. Their goal is to stop the survivors from escaping without being identified and killed.
  • Teamwork - Survivors cannot escape unless they work together. Players who wander off on their own will have difficulty surviving the elements, can fall victim to hostile wildlife, or become easy targets for the traitors.
  • Communication - There are several ways to communicate with other players, including proximity-based voice chat, private voice chat radio channels, text chat, and emotes - communication is vital if the survivors have any hope of completing their tasks and defending against the traitors.
  • Betrayal & Deception - The traitors are outnumbered and weak when the game begins, they may infiltrate the survivors and earn their trust while they build up their strength. Survivors can never be 100% sure of who to trust. The traitors can take advantage of this by spreading lies and setting the survivors against each other.

Project Winter is available for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, PC (Steam, Humble Bundle, and Greenman Gaming).
