'Fractured Online' Reveals Early Access Details, Introduces The Wildfolk Race - Screens

by Rainier on Sept. 9, 2022 @ 11:11 a.m. PDT

Fractured Online is a sandbox MMORPG built upon the cloud-based virtual world-building platform SpatialOS, providing a seamless universe and an unprecedented level of interaction with the environment.

Fractured is the first open-world sandbox MMORPG mixing action combat with fully interactable environments, appealing equally to lovers of competitive and cooperative gameplay. Jump right into the fray from day one. Defeat your enemies through your own skill and cleverness, not equipment or level.

Gather resources, craft, trade and venture into legendary travels as a solitary hero, or start a settlement with your guild and grow it into the next empire.

Fractured plans to bring together the best of Action RPGs and Sandbox MMOs, two genres that haven’t been successfully matched before. On one hand the game will feature a highly skill-based combat system that rewards tactics, reflexes and nimbleness of fingers; on the other hand, the user will be immersed in a fully player-driven economy, with an emphasis on realistic resource management, crafting and advanced world colonization features.

On top of that, Dynamight Studios wants to broaden its audience by allowing new players to be competitive from day one, by getting rid of the “grinding” mechanics that characterize the genre, and by implementing innovative rules on player interactions.

Fractured Online features three races: Humans, Wildfolk, and Demons. Each race has a different impact on game mechanics, such as which type of society players can live in, to the ways they interact with other players. Live within the peaceful Wildfolk community where cooperation and defensive gameplay shine or have free will while trying to follow the rules of a feudal society – like not breaking the law and “killing” other players - as a Human. For those that prefer hostility, blood, and terror, they can embrace their inner evil alignment by spawning as a Demon. Once a race is chosen, players can begin their quest for knowledge.

Combat also plays an integral part in Fractured Online as players will find it to be an adequate way to settle a dispute. Combat is fast-paced as fighters will learn to aim, dodge, and master over 400 abilities and 40 unique status effects. Whether abilities are used against various monsters in PvE battles or your fellow players in PvP combat is completely up to you.

gamigo and Dynamight Studios are pleased to offer additional details in preparation of the September 15th Steam Early Access launch for Fractured Online. Details include information regarding the game’s newest race, The Wildfolk, and their home planet of Arboreus along with news concerning the completion of its Closed Beta test.

Once Fractured Online enters Steam Early Access next week, one of the major changes players will experience is the opportunity to create a character as the new Wildfolk race, which favor the new cooperative playstyle. The Wildfolk show a strong attachment to nature, living in harmony and fighting anything that threatens the balance of their lands. This bond with nature grants them a natural affinity towards druid magic, drawing power directly from the planet, and are capable of morphing into their animal counterpart at will. The Wildfolk are also unique in that they have sub-races that include the tiger-like Chadra, the wolf-kin Udoadra, the bear-kin Nheedra, and the hart-kin Erwydra. Each sub-race has its own strengths and weaknesses, such as the Chadra being capable warriors that lean more towards fighting, while the Erwydra are more inclined to practice magic as they are extremely intelligent and have an excellent memory. Fractured Online’s Steam Early Access launch will make the Chadra and Erwydra sub-classes available while the Udoadra and Nheedra will be included in a future update.

Considering The Wildfolk’s rapport with nature, it should come as no surprise why they chose Arboreus to call home with its lush, vibrant vegetation and raw, primal energy. In fact, out of the three planets, Arboreus retained most of Elysium’s characteristics – which is the original planet where Humans, Wildfolk, and Demons lived together – and is the only planet still capable of naturally producing magical crystals. Wood is also in abundance on this planet, allowing Wildfolk to use it for building villages while reserving stone blocks for its main structures.

The vast landscapes of Fractured Online feature three very different worlds: Syndesia, home of the humans. Tartaros, birthplace of the demonic races – and finally Arboreus, where the Wildfolk roam free. In this feature spotlight we’re going to show you what to expect in this lush jungle paradise.

WHO ARE THE WILDFOLK?

Nobody has to be explained who humans are – a deep look into the mirror tells us pretty much all we need to know about them. The demonic race, consisting of Blood Demons, Hellfire Demons and Shadow Demons, are obviously more alien to us, and will be discussed in great detail in a later feature spotlight. Right here and now we’re going to focus on the third race populating the worlds of Fractured Online: the Wildfolk.

Wildfolk are the native inhabitants of Arboreus, a jungle-like environment, home to many beautiful and proud peoples, of which we’re going to focus on two here: the Tiger-like Chadra and the Erwydra, who are closely related to Deer. These two will be released for all players of Fractured Online in September 2022, alongside Arboreus. Two additional character races will follow later on: The Bear-like Nheedra as well as the Udoadra, closely resembling Wolves, who we will feature in another spotlight.

In their first years, the Chadra and Erwydra younglings move around like your typical quadruped – but very soon they rely more and more on their hind legs, eventually using only these for walking and running, resembling humans at least in their posture. Unlike humans, however, Wildfolk are in their core a very peaceful society, living in harmony with nature and other creatures surrounding them – which in gameplay terms means that playing on Arboreus is very much focused on working cooperatively.

BORN TO BE WILD(FOLK)

Playing Wildfolk is very different to playing humans or demons. For one thing, Wildfolk are deeply connected to their mother planet. This means they draw power directly from the primal energy of their homeworld of Arboreus, which gives them a distinct advantage in combat. Secondly, most of their abilities are rooted in the arts of druidic magic – even the structure of their society is based on tribes and clans who are led by deeply respected High Druids.

Fights between Wildfolk and other races are defined by the former’s fast and agile movements, which means that Wildfolk prefer light armor and clothes over heavy equipment. In any case, Chadra, the Tiger-Kin, are formidable fighters, delivering lightning-quick and precise attacks, while Erwydra, the Hart-Kin, lean much more towards the use of nature-bound magic due to their more fragile body structure.

THE WORLD OF ARBOREUS

Arboreus is a warm, tropical world, full of forest and jungles, rivers and lakes, volcanoes and steppes. Although it is the homeworld of all the Wildfolk races, it can also be visited by the other races – at least if they know how to behave! Humans with a Good alignment are welcome too, at least for a limited time frame, surrendering some of their stats. Demons on the other hand, and players with Neutral or even Evil alignment are personae non grata on Arboreus, who will be attacked by the land and its many usually peacefully grazing inhabitants itself while suffering heavy debuffs! So you really need to become one with the mindset of the Wildfolk in order to be allowed to visit them for any longer period of time. If you’re good on Arboreus, nobody can and will attack you.

From a geographical point of view, Arboreus has a lot to offer – quite literally, as the map is about 56 km² in size (which translates into about 22 square miles). While the main environment here is the jungle and its coast, this world has a lot more to offer: Spend enough time on Arboreus, and you will encounter volcanoes, mountains, tundras, large beaches, swamps or steppes. This means that players have to actually care about their insulation in order to survive some of the harsher environments. Most of the time however you will roam freely in the lush jungles Arboreus is famous for, in which the Fractured Online Fashion Department recommends dressing in light layers as the climate can get quite hot. Not as hot as on a demon world, but it’s a jungle environment after all – they tend to be on the warmer side of things.

MEET NEW FRIENDS!

Strolling around the rich and varied landscapes of Arboreus, sooner or later you will discover a lot of creatures – new creatures that you are not going to find on any other world of Fractured Online! Most of them are fitting the theme of the world they’re living on, like Sea Turtles, Komodo Dragons, Giant Bullfrogs, Salt Water Crocodiles, Sea Crabs, Warthogs, Wooly Tapirs or Giant Rats – many of them big and mean and ready to deliver swift doom to any brash adventurer!

There’s also all sorts of lizards, starting very small and Gecko-like and ending with man-sized Iguanas. An assortment of insects like the Termidians, which are, as the name suggests, closely related to our infamous termites – on Arboreus they start as larvae before becoming spitters, warriors and even witches! By the way, we have good news for all players suffering from arachnophobia: there are no spiders on Arboreus!

However, there are many forms of Ogres – which you may know from Myr, but there’s a different brood waiting for you on Arboreus. There are Behemuts, really big, really strong and really awesome creatures! There are Bandits that you will only find at the coast as they do not dare walk deeper into the lands. And at the very top of the food chain there are… Dragons! Arboreal Dragons, Mountain Dragons and Ember Dragons, just waiting patiently for any all-too inquisitive adventurer. It’s like your mom used to say: don’t play with the fire-breathing lizard if you can’t handle the melting bones!

COME FOR THE SIGHTS, STAY FOR THE DELIGHTS

Playing the Wildfolk not only lets you encounter many new creatures, but also gives you a ton of new things to find! For example, there will be 40-50 new abilities available on this continent as well as many new resources to collect that you can then use for crafting and imbuing items. Also there’s a wealth of new lore to discover, as Arboreus is the domain of Elysium, one of the Good gods in the universe of Fractured Online – the very first god, to be precise. Who turned himself in the original planet (named also Elysium, like himself) and created all the other Gods. He is the one and only source of the natural energy flowing through the lands – as well as Nelena, another Good god, and also the goddess of the wild and mother of all Wildfolk. Do you want to learn more about the society of the Wildfolk? Their clans, their tribes, their High Druids, their fighting rituals, their offerings to their gods? There’s lots of wonderful new things to learn when dealing with walking Tigers and Harts.

One question remains though: How will you ever reach this brave new world? Well, you can travel there by means of a Stargate which you may know from the end of the introductory tutorial – later on they will feature quite a bit more spectacle though. Each continent has its own Stargate which can be activated for a brief period of time by consuming raw primal energy in the form of primal crystals. These crystals are only available on Arboreus, so Humans and Demons will need to trade with Wildfolk for them, or get some themselves whenever they manage to reach Arboreus. But that is something that we will dig into deeper in a later feature spotlight.

In Fractured, choosing where to start your journey doesn’t mean following a different series of quests in an otherwise identical game. Join the first MMO where the race you belong to has an actual impact on game mechanics, from the type of society you live in to the ways you can interact with other players.

  1. No human is born good or bad. Make your choice to uphold the law or break the established order. From a righteous governor to a cruel brigand, any path is open to you on planet Syndesia. Beware, though: you’ll be subject to the rules of a feudal society, so think beforehand to the consequences of your actions!
  2. Living on a planet overwhelmed by giant vegetation, Beastmen have developed a deep connection to nature that endowed them with super-human resilience and keen survival skills. If you enjoy a cooperative and defensive gameplay in a peaceful community, look no further: Arboreus is your new home.
  3. Banished to a hostile planet scarce in resources and filled with dangers, Demons possess an inner evil alignment that makes it natural for them to prey on each other and on other races. Make Tartaros your choice if you’re hungry for blood and dream of becoming a legendary ravager, assassin, or worse.

When players aren’t improving their abilities, they can choose to take part in Fractured Online’s robust player-driven economy. Forget finding a broadsword within the corpse of a spider. Every item in the game is crafted by players, so you better be nice to your local blacksmith or else you could end up fighting enemies off with a stick. Crafters, merchants, farmers, shepherds, miners, woodcutters, hunters, and scavengers all play an important role in the world. Exploit the uneven distribution of resources to get high profits when trading at faraway markets – but make sure you reach your destination alive!

Stake your claim to free land in the open world, secure it from your enemies and start your own cultivation and livestock business. Your products will never be in low demand since access to food and water is essential for survival, especially when venturing into long extra-planetary travels.

Wood, stone, metal, gems, herbs. Each planet is rich in some commodities and entirely lacks others. Explore the massive universe of Fractured to locate and harvest the rarest resource nodes in every region, but remember: locals might try to stop you as environment exploitation can damage a whole ecosystem!

Not all resources are fine with being harvested. Fur, hides, bones, carapaces and several other key crafting components can only be obtained through PVE combat. If you’re an avid monster hunter, Tartaros will be your dreamland… or perhaps your worst nightmare.

Tired of MMOs where the fun begins 80 hours after you’ve started playing? In Fractured, you’re free to join your friends in the most epic adventures right off the bat. Once the strengths and weaknesses of your character are set, you’ll be on a quest for knowledge and reputation, not attribute points!

Say goodbye to the conventional RPG level and skill systems you’ve seen way too often and embrace the power and flexibility of the Knowledge System. It’s about time you get rewarded for your courage and cleverness, not for the hours you’ve spent hunting zombies or punching a training dummy!

Take a moment to rest in front of a fire in your home, a tavern or your group’s encampment. Prepare a set of abilities to define your role in battle and assign your talent points to finely tune your build. Done? Time to enjoy the freedom of a MOBA with the persistence of a MMO!

Fractured is out to break the boundaries of the MMO genre by bringing the combat style you’ve loved in single-player Action RPGs into a complex sandbox universe. Learn to aim, dodge and master over 400 abilities and 40 unique status effects: only your skills and tactics will lead you to victory!

Stuck between a clan of bandits and a raging river? Animate the waters to protect you, or freeze them over to cross to safety – then melt them to drown your foes! In Fractured, the natural elements around you can always be exploited to defeat your enemies, even when all hope seems lost.

Looking for a new home? Find a suitable location and start a settlement with your guild. As a governor, you’ll be able to guide its development into a social, trading, or military hub. Beware, though: the rise to power of your city won’t go unnoticed, so get ready to protect it from hostile raids and sieges!

Fractured Online is coming to PC (Steam Early Access) on September 15, 2022.
