'Generation Exile' Leaving Steam Early Access, Gets April Release Date - Trailer

by Rainier on March 31, 2026 @ 11:55 a.m. PDT

Generation Exile is a turn-based sci-fi colony sim set aboard humanity’s first and final generation ship.

Rebuild settlements entirely within a colossal generation ship in this turn-based city builder. Expand your city, manage limited resources and optimize production chains as you navigate difficult choices about humanity’s future among the stars.

Having left a ruined Earth, players command a colossal generation ship, rebuilding settlements across diverse biomes aboard while searching for humanity’s new home across the cosmos. Each biome presents new challenges as players build cities, manage limited resources, and optimize production chains as they navigate difficult choices about humanity’s future among the stars.

Generation Exile asks players to venture aboard humanity’s first and final generation ship, a desperate expedition teetering on the rim of collapse. You are the Caretaker- you must make the most of finite supplies and rally the remaining survivors to rebuild a sustainable society within the ship itself. Adapt to the strange ecological entity propagating on board, or succumb to ruin. It’s going to be a long journey, but no two journeys will be the same.

Developer Sonderlust Studios announced that Generation Exile will leave Steam Early Access and fully launch for PC (Steam) on April 17, 2026, as part of the 5th annual Earth Appreciation Festival!

During Early Access, the development team made substantial improvements and additions to the game, including three biomes (Grasslands, Taiga, and Rainforest), new dangers, an expanded family tree system for NPCs, and much, much more.

With 1.0, Sonderlust Studios is delivering the full Generation Exile experience, including major refinements and additions shaped by player feedback during Early Access. Some of the new features and additions being introduced include a final planetfall preparation chapter with dynamic challenges that can also be played as a stand-alone sandbox mode, more structures and upgrades for more strategic depth and options for problem-solving, many more new both minor and major narrative events, and more.

"We could not be more grateful to every player who jumped aboard Generation Exile during Early Access. The collaboration and feedback was invaluable in getting the game ready for a full 1.0 launch, especially for a small team like ours," said Sonderlust Studios founder Nels Anderson. "We're very excited to soon be delivering a complete version of Generation Exile and seeing what stories new players discover and create in their own journey to earn a better future for humanity."

Key Features:

  • Rebuild Society Within A Vast Starship
    • Plan your settlement wisely and build detailed production chains to meet your society’s needs and sustain its development.
    • Improve production by upgrading existing structures over time to improve efficiency and repurpose resources as your settlement evolves.
    • Restore the ship’s ecosystems, as the mistakes of the past have left them all near ruin.
  • Manage Your Crew
    • You’ll face choices at all stages of your journey, from designating individual task crews to settlement-wide rationing verdicts. Decisions you make will directly impact the ship's structures, crew, and well-being, and ultimately determine the key challenges of your mission.
    • Characters age, form families, and retain memories of events they witness under your leadership. Meet your comrades aboard the ship and follow their stories, spanning generations across hundreds of years.
    • The ship’s characters are procedurally generated at the start of every playthrough, resulting in a unique cast of NPCs where crewmates’ distinct skills, abilities, and personality traits yield new narratives and strategies every game.
  • Survive Among The Stars
    • Build a sustainable society and revive the generation ship’s fragile ecosystems, using only what was brought with you to sustain the search for a new home. Your situation may be isolating, the crew unruly, challenges uncertain… but as Caretaker, you are Humanity’s last hope. How will your journey end?

Generation Exile is coming to PC (Steam) on April 17, 2026.
