4. 'Deathloop' (PS5/PC)

Deathloop is a first-person action that transports you to the lawless island of Blackreef in an eternal struggle between two extraordinary assassins.

Redmond Carolipio: I know Deathloop might seem a little "Groundhog Day" or "Edge of Tomorrow" to some, but it's Arkane making the game, which means I want to play the hell out of it and see what happens. The concept of trying to assassinate several targets in a way that could resemble a so-called "perfect run" lest you start over again sounds difficult and maddening, but I have faith that it'll somehow be twisted fun. The idea of a random person in multiplayer messing up your run (or vice versa) adds a fun wrinkle.

Chris "Atom" DeAngelus: Arkane Studios has absolutely proven its talent at creating immersive interesting worlds. Between Dishonored and Prey, it has picked up the torch of '90s era PC games. It's no wonder that its latest title, Deathloop, is so highly anticipated. The title is set on the island of Blackreef, and the player takes on the role of an assassin named Colt who is caught in an endless time loop. His only way out is to assassinate eight individuals before sunrise. Each loop gives him more knowledge and flexibility, and the eventual goal is to kill all eight in one flawless run. This is made more complex by the fact that there's another time-looping assassin out there trying to stop you — and other players can take over as the assassin to make your life harder.

Andreas Salmen: Creative first-person combat is Arkane Studios's bread and butter, and it's alive and well in its new title, Deathloop. We still don't have an idea of how well the assassin-hunter multiplayer dynamic will play out, but I'm fairly confident that the FPS combat will be excellent. It feels like it could be the perfect marriage of Dishonored gameplay mechanics that reward versatile gun/weapon play and traversal, while always having to look over your shoulder for your main adversary since you're stuck in a permanent time loop. It's colorful, creative and full of implied potential that could make this my personal sleeper hit of the year if Arkane can pull it off.

David Silbert: Deathloop was a welcome surprise at Bethesda's E3 2019 press conference. There, developer Arkane Studio unveiled a stylish, action-packed take on the "Groundhog Day" scenario. Fans of Arkane's Dishonored series may be disappointed at the lack of a third game, but Deathloop promises many of the same open-ended shenanigans as its stealth predecessors. Here's hoping the game can live up to the hype of its amazing pre-release trailers.
