16. 'Dead Space Remake' (PS5, XSX, PC)

by Judy on Jan. 12, 2023 @ 12:00 a.m. PST

The sci-fi survival horror classic Dead Space returns, completely rebuilt from the ground up to offer a deeper and more immersive experience.

Redmond Carolipio: The original Dead Space became the "Alien" of my gaming library space, providing a template into what "space horror" is supposed to look and feel like. It was lightning in a bottle, mixing in the excitement of shooting the limbs of ghastly monsters with the aural terror that comes with investigating a floating death house called the Ishimura. The remake looks to be a reimagining — or rebirth — of that horror, introducing hapless Isaac Clarke to a new audience of players.

Chris "Atom" DeAngelus: The original Dead Space is a heck of a game. It's Event Horizon meets Resident Evil 4, it's one of those rare games that has aged exceptionally well. Why would I be excited for a remake? This particular remake looks to go above and beyond. The Ishimura has been completely redesigned to allow for a more seamless and wide-open experience, and gameplay improvements and tweaks have been made throughout. Even formerly silent protagonist Isaac Clarke will get the chance to speak. Similar to the Resident Evil remakes, Dead Space is shaping up to be a fine companion, rather than replacement, to the original game.

Claudio Meira: The lack of freedom to explore in the original Dead Space was its main drawback. I also didn't find it scary or that it provided a tense atmosphere. Dead Space Remake seems to address some of these points well, and that's why I look forward to it.

Tony "OUberLord" Mitera: I'll be honest: I'm on the fence with this one. There have been plenty of instances where remakes do a perfectly good job of bringing an older game into modern looks and gameplay. The thing is, the original Dead Space is a classic, and it'll be a tough balance to strike to both respect and improve upon it. We'll see how well this remake manages to do soon enough.
