'Expeditions: Samurai' Gives A Behind-The-Scenes Look At Its Artistic Vision And Visual Development - Trailer

Expeditions: Samurai is a new historical RPG that invites players to choose their own path through history in a branching story shaped by life-or-death decisions.

Expeditions: Samurai is an expansive historical roleplaying game set in Japan during the turbulent years around 1600, where every choice can shape the fate of your crew and the country itself.

Step into a richly branching adventure, forge your own path through feudal Japan, and earn your place in history. Navigate the politics, intrigue, and drama of feudal Japan as you and your crew catch the attention of powerful warlords whose struggle will determine the future of the nation — and eventually become the first European Samurai.

In Expeditions: Samurai, the famous navigator William Adams never makes history as Japan’s first European Samurai, because this time, YOU get there first. Arriving aboard the Dutch frigate "De Albatros" as the newly elected leader of a ragtag crew of privateers, players are drawn into the final chapter of a brutal civil war where every choice can shape the fate of their crew and the future of Japan. With eight companions and eight personal stories to uncover, players can build bonds that grow into friendship, rivalry, or even romance. Every crewmate has their own story to uncover - if you manage to earn their trust.

Combat in Expeditions: Samurai is dynamic. It's fast-paced - and yet still turn-based! Blending simultaneous actions, stealth, gadgets, ambushes, and a broad mix of pirate and Japanese weaponry to an exciting tactical challenge for the players. And for the first time in series history, the adventure can also be played in drop-in/drop-out co-op - because navigating feudal Japanese politics alone is hard enough.

Publisher THQ Nordic and developer Campfire Cabal have released a brand-new developer diary for Expeditions: Samurai.

In "The Art of Expeditions: Samurai", the veteran team behind the critically acclaimed Expeditions: ConquistadorExpeditions: Viking, and Expeditions: Rome offers a behind-the-scenes look at the artistic vision and visual development of its upcoming historical RPG.

Creative Director Jonas Wæver discusses how the team drew inspiration from Japan and traditional Japanese art to shape the game's visual identity. The video also showcases concept art, character customization, and the team's ongoing efforts to push the game's visuals even further in Unreal Engine 5.

The developer diary further reveals that, for the first time in an Expeditions game, players will see their fully customized character model during dialogue sequences. Companion characters will also feature dynamic facial expressions that reflect their mood and relationship with the player.

Key Features:

  • Challenging, tactical turn-based combat that will put your skills to the test
  • Your Choice: Fight, talk or sneak yourself out of any situation!
  • Co-Op: Explore the wonders of Japan alone or with a friend
  • Equip your party with countless weapons and choose skills and upgrades that match your playstyle
  • The final game is planned to feature appr. 60 hours of gameplay, with all dialogues fully voiced
