Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that cumulative worldwide shipment of its PlayStation2 computer entertainment system reached 60 million units on September 6, 2003 (Figures that Microsoft and Nintendo can only dream of). Since its launch in Japan on March 4, 2000, sales of PlayStation 2 have grown rapidly around the world and it continues to gain worldwide popularity while reaffirming its position as the standard entertainment platform in homes. With year-end/New Year holiday season approaching, SCEI will further increase hardware production to meet active demands.

Our friends over at Gamestar got word that TDK is planning on releasing a playable demo for their upcoming racing game 'Mercedes Benz World Racing'. The demo will feature 4 cars (G500, SLK 230 Compressor, 300 SL and A 190 Twin) and the Alpine scenario. It will also feature 2 tracks and 2 missions, weighing in at a mere 62mb. The US Army have released a small client-side patch for their online multiplayer FPS game America's Army. This patch does not change your version number, and is not required but adresses a few minor issues such as auth problems when completing training, server browser filtering by Honor, resolutions should be available in drop-down box on Video Settings page and admin scoreboard when connecting to Official and Leased servers. Gamesindustry.biz let us know that the public beta test of broadband games-on-demand service Steam will end on Tuesday evening Pacific time, and the first full version installer will be made available on Wednesday morning at 11am PDT via www.steampowered.com, Valve Software has announced.

With the new release on Wednesday, Valve plans to reset the account database. Any future registrations will have to be allied to a genuine CD-key, drawing to a close the honeymoon period of free Half-Life, CS and mod access - not to mention Half-Life 2 movie releases - for the two or three people still without a copy of the original game.
