Facebook Recalling/Replacing 4 Million Oculus Quest 2 Headset Components

by Rainier on July 27, 2021 @ 5:26 p.m. PDT

Due to customers experiencing skin irritation after using the removable foam facial interface that comes with Quest 2, Facebook is doing a voluntary recall of the Quest 2 removable foam facial interface.

To our Oculus Community,

Since Oculus Quest 2 started shipping, we’ve heard stories from people about the experiences they’ve unlocked—connecting with family and friends over games, staying productive with colleagues, and finding joy and delight in fitness. And we’ve heard from developers of all sizes who are growing a successful business creating new VR content and experiences.

As more people got into VR with Quest 2, we started receiving reports that a very small percentage of Quest 2 customers experienced some skin irritation after using the removable foam facial interface that comes with Quest 2 and is also sold separately, including as a part of the Fit Pack. While the rate of reports is small and the majority of reported cases are minor, we’re committed to ensuring our products are safe and comfortable for everyone who uses them.

Today, we’re introducing a new silicone cover for all customers globally, including as part of a joint voluntary recall of the Quest 2 removable foam facial interface with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada. In addition, we’ve been communicating with global regulators and are taking the extra step of temporarily pausing sales of Quest 2 globally while we work to include the new silicone covers in all Quest 2 packages. The new silicone cover fits over the Quest 2 removable foam facial interface and starting on August 24, all Quest 2 headsets will come with a silicone cover included in every box.

Everyone who already owns a Quest 2 or a Fit Pack can receive a free silicone cover that fits over the Quest 2 foam facial interface — To learn how to request a silicone cover, please click here*.

We took the skin irritation reports very seriously as soon as we learned about them and, beginning in December, we promptly conducted a thorough investigation including receiving advice from leading dermatologists and toxicologists. These experts have advised that skin irritation can occur in some segments of the population from many household items—even things like tomatoes or shampoo—and that the rates we’ve seen are in line with expectations.

Our investigation determined that our manufacturing process is safe, meaning no unexpected nor hazardous contaminants were found in the Quest 2 foam interface or manufacturing process.

When Quest 2 goes back on sale in a few weeks, we’ll also debut a new 128GB SKU that will come with the silicone cover included from Day 1. We’re ending sales of 64GB headsets as this new SKU becomes our standard Quest 2 offering for the same price of $299 USD. We hope the larger storage size will give people more flexibility to instantly access and manage more content on a single device, while the new silicone cover will give people more ways to have a comfortable experience with both the 128GB and 256GB Quest.

The team and I are committed to ensuring the quality of our products and the ongoing support and success of our developer community, with your safety and comfort as our top priority. The free silicone cover is part of that commitment.

Our customer support team is available to help answer any and all questions you have, and we’ve posted detailed answers to some of the questions we anticipate here. If you’re a part of our broader developer and partner community or if you’re an Oculus for Business customer, we're committed to ensuring the impact of this recall on your business is minimal. You will be receiving direct outreach via email with next steps.

We thank you for your continued patience and support.
